I also make works that comment on the state of humanity, either about terrorism, the Holocaust, or Memento Mori (remember life is transient and short).

Sitting Ducks, 2016, mixed media on Tyvek, 48″h x 92″w

Soft Targets Wreath
Soft Targets Wreath is a commentary on using unsuspecting people as collateral damage in idealist warfare. Each radius of the wreath indicates multiple terrorist incidents in London, Paris, and Barcelona. Made in 2017, the mediums include fabric, stencils, thermal printing, and other materials. It is 45″ in diameter.
Je suis, je suis I
Je suis, je suis was inspired by a novelized version of the Dreyfus affair in France in the late 19th century. It made me think about the modern roots for European antisemitism in what we see in contemporary terrorist attacks. It has no rational explanation, it simply is. This work is mixed media on Tyvek, 48″ high x 120″ long. Techniques include woodprints, woodcuts, block prints, stencils, and more. Made in 2015.
In 2014, my Convenient Vanities series updated the concept of 17th century Dutch still paintings that asked the viewer to consider the inevitability of death. I use staples of the genre with fine table coverings, a tipped glass, a cut lemon, butterflies to designate the shortness of life. These are updated with junk food from y local 7-Eleven with ice cream, Ho-Ho cakes that ironically don’t decay, candy bars, ad every mother’s convenience, the “Lunchable.”

DESCRIPTION
This work combines an awareness of convenient access to foods with little nutritional value with the concept of Vanitas, a term for the inevitable fate that awaits us all. My local 7-Eleven inspired me with ice cream novelties and a cut lemon, a common symbol in Vanitas paintings. It is a food sculpture inspired by Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Get Moving” campaign about children’s diets.

This work combines an awareness of convenient access to foods with little nutritional value with the concept of Vanitas, a term for the inevitable fate that awaits us all. In the supermarket, parents pick up a cardboard package in the refrigerated aisle, a “Lunchable” for example, for their children, that I have elevated to a deconstructed formal tea.

C.V. I - V
C.V. I is part of the Convenient Vanities body of work from 2014. This linocut is 8″ x 10″, black oil-based ink on Sekishu paper. In this image, I updated the concept of vanitas, a traditional still life concept of using symbols of the brevity of life. Junk food from the local convenience store contribute to shortening our lives but we enjoy every sip and crunch. This version includes the artist made frame.

Diluvium
Diluvium began as a documentation of Hurricane Katrina but was augmented after Hurricane Sandy. It is an altarpiece to the power of weather. Stoneware, Porcelain, Woodcut & Fabric. 92″ x 40″ x 37″. 2006-2012

Furnace
Furnace is a large-scale installation work inspired by crematoriums at concentration camps. 96″ x 156″ x 3″, oil ink woodcuts, acrylics, cast Western handmade papers, 1989.

Burial
Burial 1988, mixed media. 22″ x 32″ x 8″.
