Project Description

Passages

Passages: Votes for Woman evolved after finding my mother-in-law’s christening dress and wedding gown as well as beaded trim from her mother’s elopement dress. I realized I had materials from at least 4 generations of Harper women and decided to make an installation piece about their histories. The embellishment of the wedding dress seemed appropriate because my mother in law strongly disagreed with any fuss in attire and lifestyle. This work evokes the histories of these women, the oldest who would have experienced the fight for women’s suffrage. The dimensions are variable. Materials and techniques include clothing, applique, trim, silverplate, velvet, and other embellishments.
